How to Unblock Creativity

Have you ever felt blocked, like the words just aren’t there, like you cannot find what you need to say? Ever sat down to draw a picture and feel like someone or something is standing in your way?

That’s my week so far. It’s mental health awareness week and ironically, my mental pathways feel completely blocked, I’ve struggled to write a word. Let me tell you how this works.

Creativity and inspiration is like a small child, it demands attention and time, it needs to be seen and cared for. When children are tiny little babies, the most important factor for emotional development is for feelings to be recognised, tantrums need to be accepted, anger and fear allowed to exist as normal human emotions. Babies need parents who are willing to let these emotions exist, not quell, ignore or belittle them.

Which is the same as a creative ideas.

Every day I have ideas. Today it may be a silly thought about flying bananas, tomorrow it could be an epic 1,000 page book plot. The idea may involve a few hours of my time or shape my future career. Regardless of commitment required, all of these ideas are creative and they all require action.

Action could be making a note of the idea, a 30-second activity to lodge the inspiration in the conscious world, sometimes they need help to get out of our heads. Or, it could…
