You’re on my wavelength.
Last year I had a disagreement with a well known Organic proponent because he claimed a £23 (US$30) chicken from an organic farm was ‘good value’, whilst I thought it was an utterly unrealistic figure and represented a luxury commodity for the moneyed middle classes. Everyone explained that the chicken last for eleven meals and all that, but still, it’s simply ridiculous.
Considering how pivotal meat is within global culture and our diets, I believe the only way forward is to embrace the utter complexity of the food world, by ensuring that industrial food and technology – which are here to stay – truly embrace the health of the planet. Any solution which is absolutist, restrictionist or harking back to the past inevitably overlooks certain aspects of the world we live in today.
